Iran has called upon Germany to extradite a Kurdish leader they say is affiliated with an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, considered by the EU to be terrorist group. Germany has rejected the extradition on the grounds that the man is a German citizen.
This article highlights the importance of a resident’s legal tie to a country, regardless of any other national or ethnic affiliation. Because of his German citizenship, Germany is able to protect its citizen from allegations that may or may not be true while investigating charges on its own terms. While Tehran might consider this man to be a dissident, Germany does not see that as reason enough to extradite a German.
